200 Years performs “West Hartford’ at Zebulon in Williamsburg, Brooklyn on April 15, 2012

Last fall Ben Chasny of Six Organs of Admittance and Elisa Ambrogio of Magik Markers released a lovely self-titled album under the name 200 Years. This month they bring their somber / serene folk to West Philly’s Studio 34 for a concert presented by our friends at Folkadelphia on Friday, June 22.

Opening the show are Jonathan Byerley of Brooklyn’s Plates of Cake (he’s on the roster of the buzzing La Société Expéditionnaire label), and Still Life alum Brendan Codey (who will be taking a break from space rock jams for the evening, instead showcasing his skilled folksy fingerpicking).

Information on the show and venue here, tickets available for preorder here.

With the notable and remarkable exception of “Varúð,” which builds to a crashing climax in the spirit of the band’s recent classic “Festival,” little here deviates from the absorbing minor-key gloom of albums like 2002’s ( ).

We’re happy to bring you the first Still Life of spring! On Saturday, April 7, our bimonthly showcase of experimental music in the side chapel of the First Unitarian Church welcomes an ethereal three-artist show.

The broad brush of Fursaxa’s Tara Burke is exemplary of what we talk about when we talk about the spirit and fearlessness of experimental music. In a 13-year career, she’s performed at international festivals and in small galleries; opened for Sonic Youth at The Troc and headlined the Highwire; performed using harmonium and chimes, or simply vocal loops. Recently Fursaxa has played in a duo format with Helena Espvall, who also joins us for a solo set. A cellist in new-folk acts Espers and Arborea, Espvall’s own music feeds her instrument through effects to create haunting, affecting tones. Her Espers bandmate in Norman Fetter rounds out the bill with his own project, Enumclaw, which creates minimal ambient meditations bathed in delicate, liquid synthesizer tones.

Admission is $8 at the door; the show begins at 8 p.m.; the First Unitarian Chapel is located at 2125 Chestnut Street.

(flyer art by Michelle Holshue)

Philip Glass playing “Mad Rush” from the television...

Philip Glass playing “Mad Rush” from the television production Two Moon July, 1986

Thanks for a wonderful Still Life, Philly!
